From G20 to Growth, India Supports Mozambique

On January 9, 2024, H.E. Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, President of Mozambique, arrived in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, and was warmly welcomed by Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

During their meeting, Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India's commitment to assisting in Mozambique's developmental goals. The leaders engaged in fruitful discussions aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation across various sectors including defence, counter-terrorism, energy, health, trade, investment, agriculture, water security, mining, capacity building, and maritime cooperation. Modi proposed improving air connectivity to strengthen business, cultural ties, and people-to-people relationships.

President Nyusi expressed gratitude for the inclusion of the African Union in the G-20 and discussed regional and international matters, emphasising cooperation in global forums.

India and Mozambique enjoy a longstanding relationship, rooted in historical trade connections that go back centuries. This relationship was further reinforced with India's support for Mozambique's independence in 1975, as India became one of the first countries to establish diplomatic ties with Mozambique.

India has actively supported Mozambique through various development initiatives, capacity-building programs, and maritime security efforts. President Nyusi's participation in the Voice of the Global South Summit in January and November 2023 highlights this deepening partnership. Notably, President Nyusi is an alumnus of the prestigious Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, having completed a course there in 2003.
