A Collaboration for Global Peace
India and Japan continue to bolster their strategic ties, exemplifying India's rising prominence on the global stage. The recent 10th round of India-Japan consultations on Disarmament, Non-Proliferation, and Export Control in Tokyo showcased the depth of cooperation between the two nations. Ms Muanpuii Saiawi, Joint Secretary of Disarmament & International Security affairs from India and Mr Katsuro Kitagawa, DG Disarmament & Non- Proliferation from Japan, led discussions ranging from nuclear disarmament to outer space security, underscoring India's commitment to global peace and stability.
The 2016 civil nuclear agreement between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe stands as a landmark achievement, solidifying India's reputation as a responsible nuclear actor. Notably, Japan's decision to enter into this agreement with India, despite its non-membership in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, highlights India's commitment to peaceful nuclear endeavours. This agreement signifies Japan's willingness to supply India with fuel, equipment, and technology for nuclear energy generation, addressing India's increasing need for such resources to meet the energy demands of its rapidly growing population.
Over the past two decades, the security partnership between Japan and India has steadily evolved into a significant alliance, transcending bilateral relations. This growth has been fueled by the shared challenge posed by China's increasing belligerence. Recognising the need to counter common threats, Tokyo and Delhi have deepened their security cooperation, creating a robust bulwark against regional instability.
