Russia's Military Drills in The Caribbean
Between June 12 and 17, 2024, Russia is conducting military exercises in the Caribbean Sea—a significant move as it marks its first such manoeuvres in the Western Hemisphere in five years. The fleet, consisting of a frigate, a nuclear-powered submarine, an oil tanker, and a rescue tug, reached Cuban waters ahead of the planned exercises. The exercises involve deploying naval vessels and aircraft, with planned port calls in Havana, Cuba, and Venezuela. White House national security spokesperson John Kirby stated that nuclear weapons would not be at play during the exercises, even though the submarine Kazan, which is deployed, is nuclear-powered. This development comes amidst heightened tensions between Russia and the US, particularly after President Joe Biden authorised Ukraine to use US-provided weapons to strike inside Russian territory. The exercises serve as a reminder to Washington that Russia is asserting its presence in the region and reinforcing its alliances with Cuba and Venezuela. Given Cuba’s strategic partnership with Moscow and its role as a key ally, this deployment could further strain US-Russia relations. Additionally, the possibility of no-sail zones during the exercises may cause minor disruptions to maritime traffic, while temporary airspace closures could impact aviation schedules.
